Virtual Curation and the Khayalan Exhibition

Our exhibition takes place in the virtual world of Second Life, an online platform which allows us to exhibit our real work within a virtual gallery. You will also be able to view our exhibition from the comfort of your own office or home, this also enables us to share our work with more people than ever before.

The exhibition takes place online on 6th July at 10pm. To view the work you will have to download the free Second Life software and create an avatar before the 6th, you can find out how to do this here: http://secondlife.com

Once in Second Life, you can find us by searching for The University of Chester. You will only be able to access our site from 10pm onwards on the evening of the launch.

If you would like to see the exhibition without the hassle of creating an account, you can follow our live stream from our website: http://bit.ly/TheUniOfChester

We are a team of 6 students with different artistic skills including graphic design, illustration and photography. As part of our 5 week work experience programme at the University of Chester we will be researching the world of Second Life; a virtual platform which enables people to be creative and ambitious in a way that would seem impossible in the real world.

Virtual technology is now more affordable and accessible to many than it has ever been before, it provides risk free ways to explore and be creative. In a world where health and safety concerns can become a problem and prevent people from realising their full potential, virtual technology can overcome this obstacle and provide fresh, new and contemporary solutions. Using Second Life, we will be provided with the opportunity to test ideas, configuration, scale and the display of our own work.

During our research, we will be creating a virtual exhibition and a virtual tour of the Kingsway Campus. A digital version of Kingsway Campus has been made on the Second life platform where we will be displaying student artwork and exhibitions. This will include work from our 3rd year students, where we will virtually recreate their real life exhibition as it stands in Kingsway. The virtual reconstruction will also be used as a tour of the Campus for the University website; this will offer potential new students the chance to view the Campus if they are unable to attend in person for any reason.

We will also be looking at ways in which Second Life could be used in teaching and learning within the University, our findings will be looked at by the University to see if and how any of our ideas can be implemented in everyday teaching and learning.

Through this project we will gain experience in designing, building and curating an exhibition of our own work, and although in virtual reality, these experiences can be carried over into the real world and will put us in a good position for when we reach our final year exhibition.
